NextPlants (“we,” “our,” or “us”) is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how your personal information is collected, used, and disclosed by PlantApp.
This Privacy Policy applies to our website, and its associated subdomains (collectively, our “Service”) alongside our application, NextPlants. By accessing or using our Service, you signify that you have read, understood, and agree to our collection, storage, use, and disclosure of your personal information as described in this Privacy Policy and our Terms of Service.
Creating a user account is not required to use NextPlants to identify service and consulting data, but this operation is necessary to participate in the enrichment of the project.
When you create an account, we collect your email address (for password reset; may be frequently used to contact users)
For security reasons, passwords are not stored directly in the database. They are passed through a cryptographic hash function, the result of which is stored (the hashing operation cannot be reversed).
A unique digital identifier is attributed to each account and will be associated with each data (observation, vote...) contributed to this account.
Identify plants with a query
A query corresponds to one or more photos of the plant to be identified, the date and time of observation, as well as the GPS coordinates of the place of observation and the name of the place (if these options are enabled on your terminal).
When a query is modified (for example, images are added or removed), a history of queries and related results is stored.
Our identification service can be used on different platforms (Web, Android, iOS). To optimize our development, we store the type of terminal used for each query.
We store query data as well as the results suggested by our identification engine, since these data play a vital role in building a participatory observatory of plant biodiversity, which is one of the main goals of the NextPlants platform.
In addition, these data allow tracking the evolution of our system's performance over time. They also lead to improvements in this performance.
NextPlants team members may use these data as part of their ecological and/or IT research work. Thus, we can assess the distribution of wild plant species, the evolution of phenology (flowering, fruiting dates...), the emergence of invasive species... or teach the identifier to automatically reject inappropriate images (blurred buoys, photos where the subject is not a plant...).
Contribute your observations
Users with a NextPlants account can contribute their plant observations (observations are associated with the contributing user's account). This means they are public and can be consulted by any user.
If the observation comes from a previously run query, it will be linked to this query to retrieve the results suggested by the recognition engine to monitor performance.
Observations contain the same data as queries (image, date and time, GPS coordinates and location name (if these features are enabled on the terminal). In addition, the username at the time of contribution is associated with the license applicable to these data (cc-by-sa).
As for queries, qhared observations may be used as part of research work.
If the user has an account on Tela Botanica (a collaborative network of French-speaking botanists), his/her observations will be automatically shared with this partner. The goal of this exchange is to promote feedback on Pl@ntNet observations by the expert community.
Pl@ntNet data revisions
Users with a NextPlants account can (i) modify all shared observations. They can vote for image quality (the best images will be promoted on the species description table and will be used by the recognition engine as a learning basis), (ii) suggest or verify determinations (so that observations are associated with the correct species), and (iii) specify the plant organ visible on the image (leaves, flowers, fruits, branches, habit or other) (the goal is to classify the images of each organ to facilitate comparison during recognition queries).
